SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Nicholls State University baseball team recorded 10 hits in its 8-4 victory over UIW on Sullivan Field on Friday afternoon.
Nicholls (12-12, 4-5 SLC) set the tone early as starting pitcher
Nuno Parache retired the UIW (12-10, 5-5 SLC) batters in order in the first inning. The Colonels plated three runs across the next two innings as
Nico Rijo-Berger scored on a sacrifice fly in the second.
Caston Thompson put the Colonels up 3-0 with a with two run blast to center field.
UIW tied the game at three as they scored on a double and base hit in the bottom of the third. Next, a scoreless fourth frame featured
Logan Terry keeping the Cardinals out of scoring position by catching them stealing. The Colonels took control of the game by scoring four runs on four hits in the fifth.
Terry got the offense started with a leadoff single before scoring on Thompson's third hit of the game.
Carter Jenkins plated
Matt Melancon from second with his own base knock before Rijo-Berger brought Thompson and Jenkins home with a textbook double down the right field line.
Following a pitching change with two runners on, Terry threw out a runner at third base on a double steal attempt before the Cardinals scored on a base hit up the middle. The Colonels led 7-4 after five full frames.
Both teams went scoreless in the sixth frame that featured an impressive double play by pitcher
Tyler Avery where he caught a line drive and threw out a base runner at first. The teams also went scoreless in the seventh before the Colonels extended their lead in the eighth.
Pinch hitter
Hudson Mattox got the action started with a single up the middle and was replaced by pinch runner
Karson Irvin. Irvin advanced on a groundout before stealing third base and later scoring on an
Andy Miller sacrifice bunt that led to errors by the second baseman and third baseman.
Thompson led the way with four hits and three RBI while Terry and Rijo-Berger added two hits apiece. Parache finished the game with four strikeouts while allowing five hits and two earned runs in four full innings of work. Avery allowed two hits in 2.1 innings while
Peyton Lacy had one strikeout in 1.2 hitless innings of action. Owen Schexanydre picked up a strikeout en route to retiring the Cardinals in order in the final inning.
