SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Nicholls State University baseball team was beaten 5-4 by UIW in 11 innings on Sullivan Field on Saturday afternoon.
After falling behind 2-0 after two full innings, Nicholls (12-13, 4-6 SLC) took the lead by scoring four runs on two hits and four walks.
Andy Miller and
Keegan Giger began the frame with consecutive walks before scoring on a
Matt Melancon base hit to right field.
Caston Thompson and
Carter Jenkins earned their own free passes before
Nico Rijo-Berger and
Will Mabry plated them with a single and a sacrifice fly, respectively.
The Cardinals cut the Colonels' lead to one on a play where someone was caught trying to steal second. Following a scoreless fifth and sixth frame, UIW tied the game with a one out solo home run to left center field in the bottom of the seventh.
The score remained tied at four for three full innings despite both teams leaving multiple runners stranded. The tie was finally broken as the Cardinals scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning.
Six different Colonels tallied a hit and three different pitchers went at least three innings. Starting pitcher
Austin Vargas allowed four hits and three runs in three full frames.
Cole Poirrier also pitched three full stanzas while allowing one hit and striking out two batters.
Karson Trichel allowed two hits and one run in four full frames while
Joseph Bordelon allowed the final run and picked up his first loss of the season.
