Late Offensive Explosion Lifts Colonels over Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Nicholls State University scored five runs in the ninth inning in its 11-7 comeback victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night.

After falling behind 7-6 heading into the final frame Nicholls (8-8, 2-2 SLC) offense had three hits and took advantage of three errors to plate five runs to secure the Colonels' third consecutive victory.

With one down in the ninth, Keegan Giger reached on a fielding error before Matt Melancon was hit by the first pitch of the next at bat to prompt a pitching change. Following a strikeout, Giger stole third before Carter Jenkins cleared the bases with a double to right center field for an 8-7 advantage. Jenkins scored on the next play as Nico Rijo-Berger hit a single to center field and raced around the bases when the ball got past the center fielder and rolled to the wall. Jaxon Milam also reached on a throwing error and later scored on a base knock by pinch hitter Casey Artigues to put the Red & Gray up 11-7.

Joseph Bordelon finished the game with a strikeout, walk, and double play after he replaced winning pitcher Peyton Lacy. Lacy earned his first victory of the year after allowing one hit, one run, and striking out two batters across three full frames of work.

The Colonels jumped out to a 6-2 lead after scoring five runs in the third inning. With two on and two down, Rijo-Berger and Milam plated Caston Thompson and Jenkins with consecutive base hits. Greyson Shafer put the Colonels up four with a three-run blast to right field.

Starting pitcher Nuno Parache fanned eight batters while allowing three hits and four runs in 4.1 innings of work.
