NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Nicholls State University baseball team tallied 25 hits en route to scoring the most runs in a win since 2019 in the Colonels' 24-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin at Pilgram's Park on Friday night.
Nicholls set the tone early as they took a 2-0 lead on base hits by
Caston Thompson and
Keegan Giger. Stephen F. Austin tied the game with a home run and a double in the home half of the opening stanza.
The Colonels extended their lead with three runs on four hits in the second.
Logan Terry and
Fisher Ingersoll got the offense started with consecutive singles up the middle. Terry scored on a fielder's choice and Thompson plated
Casey Artigues with a double. Following a pitching change, Nico-Rijo Berger scored on
Carter Jenkins sacrifice fly to put the Colonels up 5-2.
Starting pitcher
Haden Luke had an efficient second frame that ended with a double play before the Red & Gray extended the lead with five runs and in the third. Terry laced a one out double to center field to plate
Jaxon Milam. Ingersoll brought Terry home with a base knock. After an Artigues single and a Thompson walk, Jenkins cleared the bases with a double to left field. Following another double play ending frame by Luke, the Colonels led 10-2 heading into the fourth.
Greyson Shafer and Milam scored on an Artigues base knock to center field before Jenkins picked up two more RBI with his own single to center field. Luke retired the Lumberjacks in order in the fourth with a pair of strikeouts and a line out.
After both teams were retired in order in the fifth, the teams combined for six runs in the sixth. With two down, Jenkins laced a double down the right field line before Shafer blasted a grand slam to put the Colonels up 19-2. SFA scored on a single to center field.
Nicholls scored five runs in the seventh as Ingersoll got the action started with a triple to center field. Artigues plated him with a single in the ensuing at bat. Next, Rijo-Berger and Thompson worked consecutive full count free passes before Jenkins brought two runs home with a double. Thompson and Jenkins scored on consecutive ground outs by Giger and Shafer to give the Colonels their most runs since 2019.
Every Colonel that had a plate appearance logged at least one hit as Artigues and Jenkins led the way with four apiece. Shafer, Milam, and Ingersoll had three apiece while Rijo-Berger, Thompson and Terry had two. Giger and
Logan Mock each had one to round out the offense.
Luke was stout as he allowed six hits and three runs in six innings of work to secure his sixth victory of the season.
Caleb Dyess allowed one hit and had one strikeout as he pitched the final stanza.
