Colonels Coast in Double Header Sweep on Tuesday

THIBODUAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team swept a double header against Southeastern Baptist College on Tuesday afternoon.
 
GAME ONE: Nicholls 7, SBC 0
 
Nicholls offense set the tone early as they scored seven runs across the first three innings of game one. After taking a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch, the Colonels extended their lead with five runs in the second inning.
 
Starting pitcher Noah Melancon picked up two strikeouts while retiring the side in order in the second before the offense used his momentum to blow the game open. Jaxon Milam got the offense started with a leadoff base hit before scoring on a double by Logan Terry. Terry scored a few pitches later when him Casey Artigues executed a double steal. Artigues scored on a player where Carter Jenkins reached on a fielding error before Nico-Rijo Berger scored on a Keegan Giger sacrifice fly. Caston Thompson, who walked scored on a Greyson Shafer base knock to put the Red & Gray up 6-0.
 
Melancon gave the Colonels another 1-2-3 inning on the mound before Fisher Ingersoll laced a leadoff triple before scoring on an Artigues sacrifice fly to make the final score.
 
Melancon earned his first victory of the season after picking up four strikeouts while allowing two hits in four full frames of work. Peyton Lacy allowed one hit in one stanza while Kaden Cloward had three strikeouts and allowed one hit in the final two innings of the run rule victory.
 
GAME TWO: Nicholls 16 SBC 0
 
Starting pitcher Shaydon Benson and relief pitcher Owen Schexnaydre combined to throw a no hitter as the offense tallied 16 runs on 17 hits in the run rule victory to secure the sweep. Benson finished with eight strikeouts and one walk in six full frames to earn his first win of the season. Schexnaydre pitched a flawless seventh inning that featured two groundouts and a fly out.
 
Nicholls offense got out to a hot start in game two as they scored four runs on four hits in the opening stanza. Benson got things started by retiring the Chargers in order in the first.
 
 After leadoff hits by Artigues and Rijo-Berger, Thompson worked a walk to load the bases. Artigues scored on the next play as Jenkins reached on a fielder's choice. Giger was hit by a pitch before scoring with Jenkins on a Shafer double to right center field. Shafer scored on the next at bat as Milam laced his own double to put the Red & Gray up 4-0.
 
Benson struck out the side in the third before Milam extended the lead with a base hit to shallow center field. Benson struck out the side again in the fourth before the Colonels scored four runs on four hits in the fourth stanza.
 
Rijo-Berger got the action started with a leadoff double before Thompson brought him home with a base hit. Milam plated Thompson with another single before pinch runner Will Mabry scored on a Logan Mock base knock. Artigues picked up another RBI with a bases loaded walk to put the Colonels up 9-0.
 
After another 1-2-3 frame from Benson, the Colonels exploded for five runs on five hits in the fifth. Aaron Biediger began the frame with a leadoff double followed by an Andy Miller base hit and a Giger free pass to load the bases. Mabry brought Miller and Biediger home with a single to right before Giger scored on a Milam hit.
 
Logan Mock kept the momentum rolling by bringing Mabry and Milam home with a single to shallow center field. The lineup came back around as Biediger plated Mock with a single before Tyler Johnson brought Hudson Mattox home with a base knock to put the Red & Gray up 16-0.
