Colonels Tame Lady Tigers for Second Straight Win

Final Stats HOUSTON  – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team used smothering defense and a double-double from Alisha Allen to win its second game in three days as the Colonels defeated Texas Southern, 69-48, on Sunday afternoon at H&PE Arena.

Allen, who came into the contest with a three-game 20-plus scoring streak, paced Nicholls (4-5) with 15 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.  KK Babin led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting including two from long range, and Sumar Leslie chipped in with 12 points.

In the first half, Nicholls held Texas Southern (1-5) to 20 percent shooting and limited the Lady Tigers to only six field goals. Baskets by Jasmine Hoskins and Allen gave Nicholls a quick 4-0 lead before Gianne Fleming, who scored 13, hit a 3-pointer for Texas Southern. The Colonels then put together a 10-0 run during a four-minute span to lead 14-3.

Later in the half, the Colonel defense held TSU scoreless for nearly five minutes as Nicholls expanded its lead to 30-14 with less than three minutes until intermission.  Nicholls scored 14 points off turnovers in the period as they led 32-19 at the break.

In the second period, Nicholls led by double digits the rest of the way and swelled its lead to as much as 25.  The Colonel defense had another strong 20 minutes, holding TSU to 32 percent, putting the Lady Tigers at 26 percent for the game.

Nicholls shot 41 percent from the field and had five 3-pointers, all in the second half. The Colonels took advantage at the charity stripe, connecting on 16-of-18 for an 89 percent clip.

The Colonels forced 20 turnovers in the game, led by Leslie with four steals. Jenny Nash, who scored eight points including two 3-pointers, added three steals as Nicholls racked up 10 in the victory.

Nicholls will return to Stopher Gym on Tuesday, Dec. 13, with a matchup against Belhaven University. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
