Colonels Clip North Texas in Overtime

Final Stats THIBODAUX  – Senior Sumar Leslie scored 21 points, including 11 from the free throw line, as the Nicholls State University women's basketball team survived an impressive comeback by North Texas to pick up its fourth straight victory, 67-64, in overtime on Tuesday afternoon at Stopher Gym.

Nicholls (6-5) heads into the holiday break with its longest winning streak since the 1999-98 season, where the Colonels reeled off five consecutive victories. The Colonels will have a chance to match that on Dec. 30 when they host the SUNO Lady Nights at Stopher Gym.

In overtime, Leslie connected on all four free throw attempts to help stave off North Texas (7-6), who battled back from a 17-0 deficit to start the game.  With the score at 58-all at the end of regulation, Leslie put Nicholls up with her first two free throws. The squads traded points until Jenny Nash found Alisha Allen inside for a bucket to put Nicholls back on top, 64-62, with 1:27 remaining.

After a free throw from KK Babin, who scored 14 points, pushed the lead to three, North Texas quickly scored on layup before forcing a turnover. Trailing 65-64, Laura McCoy's 3-pointer was off the mark with six ticks left on the clock. With only two seconds remaining, Leslie hit a pair at the line to seal the victory as Nicholls finished the night 16-of-20 from the charity stripe.

Along with Leslie and Babin, the Colonels were led by Allen and Nash with 10 points each. Leslie had a team-high seven rebounds with Jasmine Hoskins adding six. North Texas outrebounded Nicholls 44-34, led by Tamara Torru, who had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

The Colonels came out poised, scoring the game's first 17 points. North Texas finally scored at the 14:20 mark, but Nicholls would still lead 29-13 with less than seven minutes until half. However, the Mean Green used full court pressure to claw their way back, ending the period on a 15-3 run to shrink the lead to 32-28.

In the second half, North Texas threatened to take the lead early, but Portia Washington came off the bench to hit two crucial 3-pointers to give Nicholls a 40-32 lead. The Mean Green kept hanging around and grabbed its first lead of the day, 48-46, after a 3-pointer from Torru.

Trailing 52-51 at 4:25 mark, Nash gave Nicholls the lead with her second 3-pointer of the game, with the help of a steal and an assist from Leslie. With the score 58-56, the Mean Green evened the game on a layup with 41 seconds left, and neither team was able to score during the rest of regulation.

In the extra period, Nicholls only made one field goal, but drained 7-of-9 from the line to pick up the victory, while improving its home record to 2-1.

Nicholls shot 43 percent from the field, and 41 percent (7-of-17) from line. North Texas finished the day 39 percent overall, but made only 5-of-19 from long range. The Mean Green also struggled at the line, making 7-of-14.
