Colonels Fall on the Road at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 70-64

Final Stats CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas  – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team's struggles on the road continued on Wednesday night as the Colonels fell 70-64 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at American Bank Arena.

The Colonels (11-10, 4-3) had four players crack double figures in the scoring column, led by senior Sumar Leslie with 14 points. Sophomore LiAnn McCarthy finished with 13 points, junior Alisha Allen had 11 and KK Babin added 10 with six assists.

Nicholls only led three times in the game, with the last coming at 9-8 five minutes in. Corpus Christi (7-14, 3-5) maintained a narrow lead for most of the period, eventually stretching it to as much as eight points at the 5:13 mark. Nicholls cut it to three points after a layup by Allen and a three from Babin, but the Islanders responded with an 8-0 run and headed into the break leading 40-29.

Out of the half, the Colonels scored the game's next six points, capped off on a pair of layups by Leslie. Two free throws by Jasmine Hoskins, who led Nicholls with eight rebounds, trimmed the deficit to 44-42, but the Colonels would not get any closer the rest of the game. On the next possession, the Islanders answered with a bucket from downtown before increasing their advantage to 58-48 with 10 minutes remaining.

Nicholls managed cut the deficit to 63-57 with 3:14 left, however; Corpus Christi used a quick 5-0 spurt to match its largest lead of the game before going on to claim a 70-63 victory.

The Colonels shot 37 percent from the field and only converted on 3-of-15 from behind the arc. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished at 44.4 percent shooting and outrebounded Nicholls, 41-35.

The Islanders, whose bench outscored the Colonels' 24-9, were led by Verne'que Taylor with a game-high 20 points.

Nicholls will wrap up its Texas road-trip on Saturday when they head to San Marcos to take on Texas State. Tipoff against the Bobcats is scheduled for 2 p.m.
