Seniors Jasmine Hoskins, Sumar Leslie and Portia Washington will play their final game at Stopher Gym
THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team, searching for its first postseason berth since 2005, will host Northwestern State on Wednesday on Senior Night at Stopher Gym.
Before the game, the Colonels (13-14, 6-8) will honor their 2012 senior class that consists of forward
Jasmine Hoskins and guards
Sumar Leslie and
Portia Washington. Nicholls will also “red out” Stopher Gym as the Colonels will be sporting their red road uniforms.
Although Nicholls dropped its last home contest to second-place McNeese, the Colonels can still clinch a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament in front of its home crowd with a win against Northwestern State (6-21, 2-12). The Colonels already defeated the Lady Demons this season, 83-69, in Natchitoches and will be looking for their first sweep of NSU in the series history.
Junior
Alisha Allen led the Colonel offense against McNeese with 16 points and hauled in six offensive rebounds. Allen, who recently surpassed the 1,000-point plateau and is averaging 13.5 points per game, heads into the contest two rebounds shy of reaching 500 for her career. Sophomore
KK Babin (13.1 ppg) is also within reach of a milestone, looking to set the Colonel single-season 3-point record which stands at 74. Babin currently has 72 made 3-pointers on the year, matching her total from last season.
Leslie continues to pace the Colonels as one of the best all-around players in the conference, ranking fourth in the Southland in scoring average at 16.1. In addition to her scoring, Leslie is fourth in the SLC in assists (4.0) and leads the league in steals (2.5). She is also averaging over five rebounds and is sixth in the conference in field goal percentage (.460).
Northwestern State heads into the matchup looking to win its second straight after snapping a nine-game skid. Trudy Armstead and Jordi James combined for 56 points to lead the Lady Demons to an 86-70 victory over UT Arlington on Saturday. James is tops on the squad in scoring at 14.9 ppg, followed by Armstead 13.8.
The Lady Demons hold a 59-6 advantage all-time against the Colonels and have won 26 of 30 in Thibodaux, including the last three.
