THIBODAUX, La. – Due to inhospitable weather conditions and out of concern for the safety of student-athletes, the Nicholls State University baseball team's game against Southern University has been postponed until 6 p.m. on May 5 at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels (2-1) were set to host the Jaguars (1-0) on Tuesday, but will now shift their focus to a matchup with No. 4 Louisiana State University (3-0) at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Alex Box Stadium.
Nicholls picked up right where it left off last season as the top-ranked pitching staff in the Southland Conference. Through three games against a tough Stony Brook squad, the Colonel pitching staff registered a 1.33 ERA, led by
Justin Sinibaldi (1-0) who threw 6 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. LSU is coming off of a 3-0 series sweep of Kansas.
Nicholls is batting .253 with a slugging percentage of .421 through the first three games of the year, while holding opponents to .208 at the plate.
Senior righty
Ryan Deemes will take the mound for Nicholls against the Tigers on Wednesday. Deemes made 17 appearances with 12 starts last season, posting an ERA of 3.63 in 57 innings with 34 strikeouts and a 3-4 record. Deemes threw three scoreless innings against the Seawolves on Saturday, fanning two batters and allowing three hits in the victory.
LSU freshman righty Doug Norman is slated to start against the Colonels in the first collegiate appearance of his career.
After a rough season-opener at the plate, Nicholls has hit exceptionally well over the subsequent two games.
Alex Shermer leads the Colonels offensively, hitting .400 with two RBIs.
Kyle Reese carries a .333 batting average with three RBIs, two runs scored, two doubles and a triple.
Tanner Vandevere and
Christian Correa each carry a .300 average at the plate and have combined for five RBIs, three runs, two doubles, a triple and a home run.
Kade Scivicque spearheads the Tiger offense and went .429 with three RBIs and two runs against the Jayhawks. Conner Hale hit .385 and knocked in five RBIs with a run. As a team, LSU is batting .305 with a .358 slugging percentage.
The Colonels will take on LSU on Wednesday before making the long trek to Florida for the Diamond Cox Invitational. Wednesday's contest will be carried on KTIB 640 AM and can also be viewed on ESPN3 and the SEC Network's digital platform, SEC Network+.
