THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team earned a 1-0 win in a nonconference matchup against Lamar University, and the team's silent auction of game-worn green St. Patrick's Day jerseys earned nearly $8,000 for Mr. Joe Faiker's bone marrow transplant on Tuesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.
 
The Colonels (11-7-1, 3-3 SLC) were locked in a defensive battle with the Cardinals (7-12, 0-6 SLC) throughout the night, and Nicholls' lone run in the fourth inning proved to be the difference in the series-opener.
 
In the frame, Marc Frazier notched a single up the middle, and came home when Kyle Reese crushed a deep shot to left center. Both squads went scoreless over the remainder of the contest.
 
Righty Ryan Deemes (3-0) earned the win, tossing seven scoreless innings with six hits and six strikeouts. Robbie Petty and Stuart Holmes were dominant in relief, fanning five batters over the final two frames. Holmes' registered his seventh save of the season and moved into a tie for third in the nation for total saves this year.
 
Jayson McKinley (0-1) took the loss for Lamar, surrendering four hits with a run and a strikeout through four innings of work.
 
Justin Holt led the Colonels offensively with a 2-for-4 night. Frazier was 1-for-3 with a run and Reese finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
 
Kevin Santana hit 2-for-4 to pace the Cardinals.
 
Nicholls will host Lamar at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, before hitting the road for a three-game conference series against Sam Houston State this weekend. Wednesday's game will be carried live on KTIB 640 AM.
