HUNTSVILLE, Texas – With 100 percent chance of rain in the forecast this weekend, the Nicholls State University baseball team will play a doubleheader against Sam Houston State on Friday with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. Games two and three of the series will be played as weather allows.
The Colonels (11-8-1, 3-3 SLC) were originally set to play three games Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but inclement weather forced the squad to attempt to play two games on Friday. If weather forces a stoppage of play, the contest will resume at the next available opportunity.
The postponement marks the sixth time this season that Nicholls has had to cancel or reschedule a game due to inclement weather.
The Bearkats (10-12, 4-2 SLC) own the all-time series with the Colonels 28-52, and have won the last five matchups between the schools. The teams did not face each other last season.
Nicholls is eighth in the nation and first in the Southland Conference with a 2.06 ERA this season and holds opponents to a .227 batting average, but the Colonels are ranked 281 out of 295 in scoring.
Nicholls is coming off of a 1-1 series split against Lamar University in a midweek non-conference matchup in Thibodaux. Sam Houston split its midweek series against Baylor, downing the Bears 4-3 on Wednesday in Waco.
The Colonels will throw their usual rotation of righty
Marc Frazier, Southpaw
Grant Borne and right-hander
Justin Sinibaldi this weekend. Frazier (1-3) will take the mound for game one on Friday, carrying a 3.76 ERA. Borne (1-2) will get the start in the second contest on Friday and enters with a 1.24 ERA. Sinibaldi (3-1) will take the hill for the series finally and has a 0.82 ERA this year.
The Bearkats are set to start lefty Andrew Godail (1-3) in the series-opener, who holds an ERA of 2.67. Southpaw Logan Boyd has a 3.90 ERA and will take the mound in game two on Friday. Righty Ryan Brinley (1-2) will throw in the final game and brings a 4.50 ERA.
Kyle Reese leads Nicholls offensively with a .342 average, nine runs scored, six RBIs and seven doubles. Reese is coming off of a school record 6-for-6 performance on Wednesday. Frazier is hitting .327, good for second on the team, and has eight runs, seven RBIs and two home runs this season.
Justin Holt leads the squad with 13 runs scored, while
Christian Correa and
Tanner Vandevere each have nine RBIs to pace the squad.
The Colonels have just two players .300 and above. In contrast, Sam Houston boasts six players with averages over .300. Dylan Ebbs leads the Bearkats with a .378 average, 11 runs and 10 RBIs. Travis Lee has a team-high 19 runs scored and is second on the team at the plate, hitting .365. Spence Rahm has a team-leading 21 RBIs on the year.
