Nicholls Baseball to Battle the Ragin’ Cajuns in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. – After a rough outing on Friday against Sam Houston State, the Nicholls State University baseball team bounced back to win their series finale and will now set their sights on the Ragin' Cajuns of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

The Colonels (12-10-1, 4-5 SLC) will battle the Ragin' Cajuns (12-8, 5-3 Sun Belt) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

Louisiana-Lafayette is coming off of a 2-1 series win over Georgia State, after dropping consecutive matchups with the University of Arkansas-Little Rock in a March 15 doubleheader.

Louisiana-Lafayette holds a 69-51-1 advantage in the all-time series against Nicholls, and carries a three-game win streak into Wednesday's game. The Ragin' Cajuns have won 17 of the last 21 meetings with the Colonels.

Senior righty Ryan Deemes (3-0) will take the mound for Nicholls, bringing a team best 0.63 ERA with 31 strikeouts through 28.2 innings this season. Deemes is currently the top-ranked pitcher in the Southland Conference and ranks fourth in the nation.

Southpaw Connor Toups will get the start for Louisiana-Lafayette. Toups enters the matchup with a 3.00 ERA and three strikeouts this year. Last season he tossed one scoreless inning against the Colonels, allowing one hit with two walks.

Kyle Reese leads Nicholls offensively, batting .321 with seven doubles, two triples and six RBIs. Reese was named SLC Hitter of the Week after setting the school record for hits in a game with a 6-for-6 outing against Lamar University. Only three players in the history of the league have posted more hits in a game. Tanner Vandevere and Christian Correa are tied for the team lead in RBIs with 10 apiece.

The Rajun' Cajuns are leading the Sun Belt offensively with a team average of .289. All-American shortstop Blake Trahan leads the Sun Belt with a .416 average and has registered two doubles, a home run and 13 RBIs this season. Last year Trahan went 0-6 against Nicholls, but drew three walks and scored twice. Senior Greg Davis paces Louisiana-Lafayette with 17 RBIs and his batting .319 on the year.

The Colonels will clash with the Ragin' Cajuns on Wednesday before taking on Southeastern Louisiana in a home-away-home three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. in Thibodaux. Wednesday's contest will be broadcast live in KNSU 91.5 FM.
