THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team will take on Alcorn State on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader at the ASU Softball Complex, starting at 1 p.m.
The teams squared off earlier this season in the Lion Classic on opening weekend, with Nicholls (18-13) coming away with a 6-1 victory. The Colonels were held to just three hits in the win, but took advantage of eight walks to pick up the victory.
Despite the three-hit game against Alcorn State (2-18), the Colonels have been one of the best hitting teams in the Southland this season, posting a .314 batting average.
Haley Parkerson led Nicholls at the plate last week, hitting .556 against Central Arkansas to up her average on the year to .302. Parkerson and
Payton Gremillion, who is second on the team in batting with a .369 average, both carry five-game hitting streaks into the doubleheader.
In the circle,
Hannah Haydel has been the ace of the Colonels' staff with an 11-6 record and a 2.51 ERA. After UCA rallied in the final inning against Haydel for a win Saturday, she came back to defeat the Sugar Bears on Sunday in the Colonels' 6-5 extra inning victory.
The Colonels will return home for their next conference series as they host McNeese State for a three-game series, starting Friday night, April 3, at 6 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m.
