Nicholls Baseball Faces In-State Rivals Tulane and ULM in Consecutive Games

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team will put its five-game win streak on the line as it faces Tulane at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in New Orleans before traveling to Monroe for a 2 p.m. battle with ULM on Wednesday.

The Colonels (18-12-1, 8-7 SLC) are riding their longest streak of victories this season after downing Southeastern Louisiana and Alcorn State, before earning a three-game series sweep of Incarnate Word over Easter weekend.

The Green Wave (20-12) were ranked 25th in the nation back on March 3 when Tulane downed Nicholls, 5-0, in Thibodaux. Since that win, the Green Wave have gone 9-10, and are coming off of a 2-1 series loss to East Carolina in Greenville over the weekend.

The Colonels will take on the Warhawks (15-14) for the first time this season, after their original matchup on March 11 was postponed due to poor weather conditions. ULM dropped its series against South Alabama, 2-1, before falling to Louisiana Tech in a single-game matchup, but the Warhawks earned a 2-1 series victory over UT-Arlington in their most recent action over the weekend.

Nicholls is set to start righty Cole Stapler (2-0) on Tuesday against Tulane, while right-hander Marc Frazier (1-5) will take the hill against ULM. Stapler carries an ERA of 4.50 on the season with 12 strikeouts through 16 innings of work. Frazier brings a 5.20 ERA and has fanned 30 batters through 36 1/3 innings on the mound.

Righty Ian Gibaut (4-3) will get the call for the Green Wave, and right-hander Cole Hendrix (0-1) will get the start for the Warhawks. Gibaut has 27 strikeouts through 24 2/3 innings this season, while Hendrix has two strikeouts through eight innings on the year.

Kyle Reese leads the Colonels offensively, batting .316 with 15 runs scored and 12 RBIs. Justin Holt paces the squad with 20 runs, while Tanner Vandevere has driven in 16 runs this season. After an outstanding week at the plate, Vandevere was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week on Monday. Through four games, Vandevere hit .500 with a 1.100 slugging percentage, five runs and five RBIs. He hit two triples and two doubles and is now the league-leader in triples this season.

Stephen Alemais spearheads the Tulane offense with 27 RBIs and a .333 average at the plate. Alemais went 1-for-5 with a run scored against Nicholls in the previous meeting between the programs this year. Tulane was held to just four hits on the night.

Kodle Tidwell heads up the ULM offense, batting .375 with 23 runs scored and 17 RBI. Keelin Rasch paces the squad with 28 RBI and has scored 23 runs on the season.

The matchups with Tulane and ULM will be the first of five road contests for the Colonels.  Both ballgames will be broadcast on KNSU 91.5 FM.
