Live StatsTHIBODAUX, La. – Coming off an outstanding opening weekend, the Nicholls State University softball team will make its 2016 home debut on Wednesday, Feb. 17 as the Colonels host Jackson State for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Colonel Softball Complex.
Along with it being the home opener, Wednesday will serve as Student Appreciation Day. Free pizza and t-shirts will be available for all students until supplies last. Admission to all home softball games is free of charge.
Nicholls went 4-1 in the Lion Classic to start the season thanks to a strong all-around performance by the Colonels. As a team, they hit .336 in the five games and outscored the opposition, 29-8. In the circle, Nicholls posted a 1.81 ERA and limited batters to a .211 average.
Sophomore
Payton Gremillion led the offense, going 8-of-17 at the plate with two doubles.
Danielle Phillips tallied seven hits with a double,
Brooke Morris had six hits and a team-high five runs scored, and freshman
Amanda Gianelloni had five hits with a double and a triple.
Senior
Alexis Huss led Nicholls with six RBIs, helped by her grand slam in the run-rule win against Tennessee State.
In the circle, senior
Hannah Haydel notched starts in all three days, going 2-1 with a 1.47 ERA and 17 strikeouts. Haydel tossed two complete games and totaled 19 innings pitched. Freshman
Megan Landry also had two wins, highlighted by a no-hitter against Mississippi Valley State in her first career start.
Jackson State dropped its first two games in the Sand Dollar Classic, but bounced back to defeated Florida A&M, 8-6. Canessa Swanson led the offense by going 5-of-7 in two games played, while Sarah Gore and Ashley Neal had five hits each as well.
Merina Young earned the win in the circle for JSU, finishing with a 1-1 record and a 1.91 ERA. She struck out seven batters in 11.0 innings.
Following Wednesday's doubleheader, Nicholls will head to Montgomery, Ala. for five games in the Black and Gold Tournament, hosted by Alabama State. Play begins on Friday (Feb. 19) against Middle Tennessee State at 12 p.m.
