THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will host its annual Stuff Stopher Game Wednesday night (Feb. 24) as the Colonels take on rival New Orleans. Tipoff against the Privateers is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The game will also serve as the program's Pink Out game, where the Colonels will wear their pink uniforms to help promote Breast Cancer Awareness. All fans are encouraged to wear pink as well.
The crowd could play a huge part in the Colonels' bid for a fifth consecutive postseason berth. Nicholls is currently a six-seed in the Southland Conference Tournament, but is also one of three teams with six league wins. Sam Houston, which the Colonels defeated earlier this season, sits a game out at 5-9 in league play.
Nicholls (8-15, 6-8 SLC) has slid down in the standings after falling in its last three games. The Colonels had a huge comeback win over McNeese State on Feb. 6, which gave head coach
DoBee Plaisance her program record 90th win, but have since suffered setbacks against Southeastern Louisiana, Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin. With only four games remaining, Nicholls can still get back on track and secure a first-round bye, which is awarded to the top four teams.
If postseason implications are not enough, history could be made in Wednesday night's game as senior guard
LiAnn McCarthy is aiming to become just the 14th Colonel in program history to reach 1,000 points. McCarthy has been the Colonels' top scorer this season (13.5) since returning from two-plus years of knee injuries. She enters the contest with 977 career points.
New Orleans (7-16, 4-10 SLC) is coming off a loss 17-point loss at Northwestern State, but the Privateers have a chance to earn the season sweep over the Red and Gray. The teams squared off in the Crescent City on Jan. 27, and UNO received a game-high 28 points from Randi Brown to secure a 62-55 victory.
Brown is averaging 17.9 points on the season and 18.1 in league play. She is the lone Privateer to score more than seven points per game.
Following Wednesday's game, Nicholls will head to Lake Charles to take on McNeese State in a women's/men's doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 27.
