THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will go for its third consecutive road win in the series against Central Arkansas as the Colonels play their final road game of the 2015-16 campaign Wednesday night at the Farris Center.
Tipoff for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Stats, audio and video links for the contest are available at geauxcolonels.com.
Coming off one of its worst conference losses in recent history, Nicholls (9-17, 7-9 SLC) will need to quickly shake it off as the top-seeded Sugar Bears (24-3, 14-2 SLC) await. UCA handed the Colonels a six-point loss earlier this season on ESPN3 in Thibodaux (71-65) and will be looking to knock off Nicholls in Conway for the first time since 2012.
The Colonels have struggled on the road this season, posting a 3-8 record. Nicholls won three conference games away from Thibodaux in January, but dropped all three road contests in February. However, Nicholls has had recent success in Conway, winning 75-72 in overtime last season and 68-62 in 2013.
Senior
LiAnn McCarthy reached a milestone in the last outing as she surpassed 1,000 career points, and a victory over UCA on Wednesday would extend two team records for the Colonels. Nicholls enters the contest looking for its fifth consecutive season of 10 or more wins, and a victory would also guarantee the squad's fifth straight appearance in the postseason. With four spots already clinched, three teams – including the Colonels – have seven conference wins, while two have six. If Nicholls drops its final two contests, their postseason fate would come down to tiebreakers, which will be determined following Saturday's games.
The Sugar Bears have already clinched the top seed in the tournament, thanks in part to one of the stingiest defenses in the nation. UCA ranks eighth in the NCAA at 51.0 points allowed per game and is limiting its opponents to 35.8 percent shooting, which is good for 24th in the country.
In the first matchup between Nicholls and UCA, the Colonels held a 29-25 lead at the half before the Sugar Bears missed just five shots in the third quarter to gain a 49-46 advantage. Despite receiving 26 points from McCarthy and 20 from freshman
Cassidy Barrios, Nicholls was never able to regain the lead.
Following Wednesday's game, Nicholls will host Southeastern Louisiana at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 5. The game will serve as Senior Day and the team will honor McCarthy and
Jovana Mandic before tipoff.
