LEMONT, Ill. – Nicholls State University golfer
Peyton McCulloch started his senior campaign on a high note as he earned a tie for sixth place out of 75 competitors for his first career top 10 finish, while leading the Colonels to seventh-place at the John Dallio Memorial.
A native of Zachary, McCulloch paced the Colonels with a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish the three-day tournament with a 224. His score placed him just a stroke behind fifth place and eight behind DePaul's Ethan Blue, who earned the individual medal with an even 216.
As a team, Nicholls shot a 305 for the final round, besting their previous low mark of the tournament by two strokes. The Colonels finished with a 923, trailing sixth-place Drake by four strokes. DePaul had the best score of the 13 teams with an 893.
"Overall, it's not where we want to be, but it was a better round than yesterday. It definitely gave us something to build on," said Nicholls head coach
James Schilling.
McCulloch's day was highlighted by an eagle on Hole 13. He was one of only 16 golfers to record an eagle in the tournament, and he also added a pair of birdies in the final 18.
Jamison Thomassee had the second-best showing for the Colonels with a 75, fueled by 14 pars.
"It was a great turnout for Peyton. And Jamison had a great round which helped us out tremendously," Schilling said.
Jack Lee put together his best round of the event with a 76 to finish with a 233.
Josh Fullilove and
Chad Watts-Denyes carded an 80 and 83, respectively, to shoot a 237 for the three rounds. Thomassee posted a 241 after shedding seven strokes from his previous round.
The Colonels will head back to Illinois next weekend for the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational. The two-day tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept. 26. For the latest on Colonel Golf, please follow the team on Twitter
