MADISON, Ill. – Following 36 holes of action on Monday in the 2016 Derek Dolenc Invitational, the Nicholls State University men's golf team sits in 10
th place out of 15 teams.
Nicholls concludes the event on Tuesday with 18 holes. A shotgun start is scheduled for 8 a.m.
The Colonels opened up with a 296 and followed with a 302, placing 10
th with a 598. Nicholls had 23 birdies in the two rounds at have the second best average on par 5s at 4.8. They hold a stroke lead over Western Illinois and trail Northern Iowa by six strokes.
"Overall, we did a good job with the amount of birdies we made, but we had way too many big numbers. That's something we can't afford to do," said Nicholls golf coach
James Schilling. "We'll work to fix some things and see how it goes tomorrow."
Senior
Peyton McCulloch led the team once again, carding a 71-74—145 to finish the day tied for 15
th place. McCulloch had a team-high six birdies, followed by
Jack Lee with five, who also shot an even-71 in the first round before shooting a 77 for a 148. Four of Lee's five birdies came on par 5s.
Josh Fullilove finished with a 78-75—153,
Chad Watts-Denyes had a 78-76—154 and
Albert Badosa-Soler shot a 76-81—157.
Leading the field after 36 holes was Missouri State's Jack Knoesel with an 8 under-134, helping MSU to a tournament best 580.
