MADISON, Ill. – After finishing in the top 10 last week for the first time in his career,
Peyton McCulloch put together an even better showing for the Nicholls State University golf team as the senior shot a 1-under for a 215 to finish in a tie for fourth place in the 2016 SIUE Derek Dolenc Intercollegiate.
McCulloch, who earned a sixth-place tie at the season-opening John Dallio Memorial, was one of just four golfers in the field to shoot under par in the final round. McCulloch started out with a bogey on his second hole before sinking a birdie on hole 16. On the front, he bogeyed hole 1 before coming back with birdies on 4 and 6.
McCulloch finished at 2-over for the tournament, which was two strokes back of third place. Missouri State's Jack Knoesel took the individual crown with a 7-under as he led his team to the title (875).
Fellow senior
Josh Fullilove carded a 1-over 73 in his final round, putting him at 226 and at a tie for 36th.
Jack Lee finished second for the Colonels in the event with a 224 after shooting a 76 on Tuesday.
"Had another outstanding performance by Peyton, which was the best finish of his career. And a great bounce back by Josh to finish strong," said
James Schilling, Nicholls golf head coach.
As a team, the Colonels stayed at 10th place for the tournament, which featured a total of 15 teams. Nicholls improved from its last round, going from 302 to 299 for a three-round total of 897. The team's best showing came in the opening 18 holes with a 296.
Albert Badosa-Soler wrapped up the event with an 80 for a 237 and
Chad Watts-Denyes scored an 85 for a 239.
"The conditions were a little more difficult today with the wind, making the course play a few strokes harder," Schilling said. "Now we'll focus on our academics over the next few weeks as we prepare for our final fall tournament."
