MCKINNEY, Texas –
Albert Badosa-Soler shot an even 72 in the opening round of the Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship and finished the day tied for second place, leading the Nicholls State University men's golf team to fourth-place after Monday's action at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.
Badosa-Soler's stellar round was highlighted by the field's only eagle of the day as he carded a three on the par-5 third. He added two birdies on the front nine before heading into the clubhouse with a 72 on the day. He had just three bogeys in the round, with one being a double on six.
The Colonels, which shot a 309, also received strong performances from
Jack Lee and
Josh Fullilove. Lee drained three birdies for the round, with two coming on the back as he shot 1-under after the turn. He finished at 3-over 75, good for a tie for ninth place. Fullilove birdied the par-4 11th and finished a stroke behind at 4-over 76, placing him at a tie for 13th.
Rounding out the competitors for the Red and Gray were
Baker Stevenson (86) and
Peyton McCulloch (88).
"This is an extremely tough course and the wind was brutal, but I'm extremely pleased with how our top three guys performed," head coach
James Schilling said. "Albert had an excellent round to finish among the leaders, and Jack and Josh really competed today and fought through it. Unfortunately, we had two high scores and had to take one, but we'll look to rebound and improve Tuesday."
Nicholls' 309 as a team trails Sam Houston by two strokes for third place. Southeastern Louisiana led the field with a 7-over 295 and McNeese was second at 302. SLU's James Anstiss ended the day with the lead at 2-under 70, followed by McNeese's Andreas Krokiede and Badosa-Soler at 72.
The Colonels tee off the second round at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. They will be paired with Houston Baptist and Stephen F. Austin. Live scoring is available
