Russo named assistant coach for Colonel tennis

THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University head tennis coach Greg Harkins announced Monday the addition of Frank Russo to the staff as assistant coach.

Russo comes to Thibodaux after serving as an assistant at Fordham University for the men's and women's teams last season. The women's squad compiled a 20-win season and reached the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 conference tournament. The men's team also had success, finishing with a winning season at 10-8.

"Coach Russo is a great addition to our program," Coach Harkins said. "He played a big role in Fordham's success last season, and we know his coaching abilities will help our teams reach our goals. I'm very excited to have him on board."

Before Fordham, Russo was the owner of New Level Tennis in Darien, Conn. where he coordinated the most extensive sports program in Darien, providing tennis lessons and camps for both kids and adults of all ages.

Before his time in Darien, Russo was the Head Academy Pro at Johnstone Tennis Academy in Purchase, N.Y., where his students consisted of several top 25 Eastern section juniors. In addition to his time on the court, Russo recruited for the academy and traveled with players to tournaments. He also served as a teaching pro at Shippan Racquet club in Stamford, Conn. and before that, The Ocean Club in Long Beach and Sportime in the Hamptons in East Quogue, N.Y.

Russo graduated from Iona College in 2003 after playing four seasons with the Gaels, which included two years as team captain.

Both tennis teams begin the season on Saturday, Feb. 3 at home against Loyola-New Orleans. The women start things off at 11 a.m. at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
