THIBODAUX, La. – After outscoring Sacred Heart University 31-6 in the last two games, the Nicholls State University baseball team is prepped for its conference-opening weekend versus Northwestern State University on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
The contests Friday and Saturday will begin at 6 p.m. with the finale starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Fried fish poboys will be on sale Friday for $6. Each batter that the Red and Grey strikes out in the first takes $1 off beer prices through the fourth. Sunday will feature burger and beer specials. Burgers will be $1 off and two beers for $5 will be sold in the fifth inning.
The Colonels (3-10) topped SHU 21-6 Tuesday behind a 14-run second inning and closed with a dominating 10-0 win on Wednesday. Senior outfielder
Lee Clark earned three RBIs in both games. Fellow senior shortstop
Joey Morales has reached base in 12 straight games, and senior infielder
Ethan Valdez fronts the team with 18 hits and a .380 batting average.
Nicholls ranks second in the SLC with 2.0 doubles per game, seventh in Division I with 28 batters hit by pitch and 20
th in the country with 10 sacrifice bunts.
The Demons (7-6) have dropped their last three games, falling to No. 9 Texas A&M 6-1 Tuesday and 7-6 Wednesday. Outfielder Kwan Adkins and infielder David Fry are tied atop the conference in total hits (21). Northwestern State turns a league-best 1.5 double plays per game.
