P.J. Burkhalter and wide receiver
Dai'Jean Dixon garnered another all-American selection as the duo was named to the 2021 Stats Perform All-America teams.
Burkhalter was named to the top team to become the first player since 2016 to earn Stats Perform All-America First Team three times. It marked the third all-American honor for the standout guard this season after being selected to the AP First Team and HERO Sports Second Team. Dixon landed on third team for his third AA honor as well. He was an AP third-team selection and a first-team recipient by HERO Sports.
A three-time Southland Offensive Lineman of the Year, Burkhalter anchored the nation's No. 6 rushing offense which featured 14 100-yard rushing performances by four different players. Nicholls nearly had two Colonel rush for 1,000 yards this season as quarterback
Lindsey Scott Jr. ran for 990 yards while
Collin Guggenheim totaled 930 yards. Bulkhalter and the offensive line ranked first in the nation in fewest tackles for loss allowed and was also sixth in sacks allowed.
Burkhalter had one of the most decorated careers in program history, starting in 57 consecutive games for the Colonels. In his five seasons in the Red and Gray, Nicholls had 11 different players rack up a total of 41 100-yard games. Behind Burkhalter, there was nine different program rushing records set highlighted by running back
Julien Gums' 1,232 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2019. This season, Guggenheim set the single-season school record with a 103.3 yards rushing per game.
Dixon continued to be one of the best receivers in the nation, finishing with 1,002 yards and eight touchdowns on 71 receptions in 10 games played. A finalist for the Walter Payton Award, Dixon also set a single-game record and tied another in the near victory at Sun Belt champion Louisiana when he finished with 14 receptions for 198 yards and two touchdowns. Dixon had four 100-yard games in his final campaign, with all four coming against nationally-ranked or FBS opponents.
Dixon also had a storied career, leaving as the program's all-time leader in receiver yards (3,802), receptions (236), receiving touchdowns (35) and points scored (216). While Dixon set all of the Colonels' career records in the spring, he vaulted up the Southland's record books in the fall as he finished second in receptions, third in receiving yards and fourth in TD catches.
