BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Nicholls State University softball team averaged a Friday loss to Alabama State with an 8-0 run-rule victory Saturday in the UAB Softball Invite. The Colonels played host UAB in the nightcap, falling 7-1.
Nicholls totaled 10 hits against Alabama State, using a 3-run first to take command early.
Kennedy Hebert highlighted the inning with a 2-run single.
The Colonels put up a four-spot in the third to go up 7-0. Freshman
Alexa Poche' belted a 2-run home run in the inning, which was the first long ball of her young career.
In the fourth,
Melise Gossen singled in a run to put the run-rule into effect.
Emily Danehower would allow a leadoff single in the fifth before completing a three-hit shutout. Danehower was outstanding in the victory, striking out one while not issuing a walk.
Offensively, Poche', Hebert and
Ashlyn Reavis each had two hits. Hebert and Poche' both drove in three runs in the game.
In the second contest, UAB broke the game open with four runs in the fifth and added two insurance runs in the sixth. Nicholls ended the shutout bid on a Lulu Vasquez RBI single in the seventh.
Jordan Moon took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits in 4.2 innings.
