THIBODAUX, La. - With only four series remaining on its Southland Conference schedule, the Nicholls State University softball team will look to begin its push towards the postseason, starting with a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Chapman Field.
Friday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. and Saturday's finale will start at 11 a.m.Â
Nicholls (8-20, 1-14 SLC) will need to find a way to notch a win on the road after suffering a sweep at Central Arkansas last weekend, dropping its record to 0-8 in away games. Despite being only outhit 19-14 in the series, the Colonels were outscored 23-3 in the three losses. UCA was able to take advantage of 19 walks and nine Colonel errors to earn the sweep.
Ashlyn Reavis continued to stay hot at the plate by going 5-for-10 in the series to increase her batting average to .397. She had two two-hit games and now has five multi-hit outings in her last nine contests. Also on offense,
Melise Gossen hit a solo shot in the finale for her second career home run.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (16-22, 6-9 SLC) is coming off an impressive 8-0 run-rule win over former Southland foe UTSA on Wednesday. However, the Islanders have struggled in league play after a fast start, losing eight of its last nine.Â
Ashleigh Sgambelluri heads the Islander offense with a .315 batting average, while Sammi Thomas (.274) has a team-high four homers and 24 RBIs. In the circle, Beatriz Laura is 11-7 with a 2.22 ERA after her one-hit shutout against UTSA.Â
Nicholls has won the last nine meetings against the Islanders and has not lost in Corpus Christi since 2010. The Colonels earned a sweep in the last meeting in 2018, outscoring the Islanders 24-1 at Chapman Field.Â
