THIBODAUX, La. – Seven Nicholls State University senior softball student-athletes will play for the final time at Swanner Field as the Colonels host McNeese for a three-game series, starting Friday, May 7 with a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
Saturday's finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. and following the contest, Nicholls will recognize its seven-member 2021 Senior Class –
Caitlin Garcia,
Skylar Hamilton,
Emma Holland,
Alexis LaBure,
Corynn Major,
Kelsey Miller, and
Yasmeen Williams, along with team manager Annie Landry.
The Colonels (11-26, 4-20 SLC) will be looking to send the seniors out on a high note by ending the current four-game losing skid. Nicholls took one game against Abilene Christian in its last home series but was then swept on the road at Lamar.
Although the focus will be on the 2021 class this weekend, freshman
Ashlyn Reavis carries a .407 batting average into the finale and is riding a team-best seven-game hitting streak. Fellow rookie
Lulu Vazquez has also found her groove at the plate, hitting a team-high .429 in conference in limited at-bats. She has hit safely in five of the last six games with four of the outings being two-hit.
For the Cowgirls, they have secured a spot in next weekend's Southland Tournament and currently sit in third place at 28-23 and 16-8 SLC. McNeese won its final home series against Northwestern State last weekend and has taken 10 of its last 12 games.
McNeese is led by reigning Southland Hitter of the Week, Kaylee Lopez, who is batting .373 with 16 RBIs. Haylee Brinlee brings a 12-game hitting streak to Thibodaux and leads the Cowgirls with nine home runs and 37 RBIs.
