DULUTH, Ga. - The Nicholls State University men's golf team finished up the Georgia State Invitational with its best round of the two-day tournament, shooting a 295 Tuesday at the Berkeley Hills Country Club.
Nicholls ended Monday's 36 holes in 14th place out of 16 teams and stayed there after Tuesday's action, finishing at 909 (309-305-295) to beat out Valdosta State (926) and Central Michigan (934). The Colonels nearly caught Austin Peay, which took 13th at 907.
Ryan O'Neil was the top finisher for the Colonels, tying for 30th with a 223. He and redshirt freshman
Peyton Canter (233) carded the best rounds for the Red and Gray as each turned in a 2-under 70. O'Neil's came in the second round which was helped by five birdies, and Canter's career round in the final 18 holes was aided by seven birdies.
Mickael Najmark (224) also had a below par showing with a 71 in the second round. He finished a stroke behind O'Neil to tie for 35th place.
For the rest of the lineup,
Martin Trochu (237) posted a 74 in the third round while
Jace LeJeune's lowest was a 75 in the opener.
Tennessee Tech and James Madison tied for the team lead with an 867, but Tech claimed the title after winning the playoff. They also won medalist honors as Jackson Skeen prevailed by two strokes with an 8-under 208.

Nicholls will wrap up its Fall Schedule next week in the Tempest Collegiate, hosted by Texas State. The three-day tournament starts on Sunday, Oct. 9 at the Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater, Texas.
