Seventh-inning rally lifts Colonels to 5-4 win over Louisiana Tech

THIBODAUX, La. - Basiel Williams doubled with the bases loaded to drive in the game-tying runs in the seventh inning and a wild pitch allowed the go-ahead runner to score, as the Nicholls State University baseball team rallied with four runs in the inning to defeat Louisiana Tech, 5-4, on Tuesday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

While the comeback was similar to the Colonels' matchup against Tulane last week, the bullpen combined for 7.0 shutout innings with just three hits allowed to keep Nicholls (5-4) within striking distance.

Trailing 4-1 in the seventh, Jaden Collura got things started with an RBI single with the bases loaded. With the bags still full, Williams laced a shot down the third-base line for two runs to make it 4-4. But after an unsuccessful squeeze play, the Colonels caught a break as Williams raced home and scored on a wild pitch.

Cade Evans took over on the mound and after hitting the first batter he faced, Xane Washington made a running catch in right and doubled up the runner at first to end the inning.

In the ninth, Evans sat the Bulldogs down in order for his first save of the season.

David Vial Jr. picked up the win, tossing 1.0 innings with one strikeout. Chase Gearing had an outstanding performance out of the bullpen, striking out five with two hits allowed in 4.0 innings.

Williams went 2-for-3 to lead the Colonel offense and had two runs scored. His other run came in the third on a Dane Simon RBI groundout.

Louisiana Tech (5-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first via a Steele Netterville home run over the left field wall. Tech tacked on another in the second on an RBI fielder's choice. But the Bulldogs were held to five hits with Taylor Young going 2-for-3.
