Season-high 16 hits fuels Colonels to series-clinching win over Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nicholls State University baseball team pounded out a season-high 16 hits and led 8-0 over Memphis before going on to take the series with a 14-9 victory Saturday afternoon on FedEx Field.

Nicholls (7-5) had a fast start with a four-run first and never trailed in the game. Despite the eight-run lead, the Colonels had to use another four-run frame in the eighth to hold off the Tigers, which scored all nine runs in the final three innings.

Xane Washington posted a four-hit day to lead the offense, with Edgar Alvarez and Alec Paz adding three hits. Alvarez drove in two in the first before Paz homered for the second straight game, giving Nicholls a 4-0 lead. Austin Cain also had a multi-hit day with two singles.

Kyle Boudreaux added a run in the fourth on a RBI double, then in the sixth, the Colonels pushed across three more. Washington highlighted the frame with an RBI single.

Memphis finally got to Tyler Theriot (2-1) in the seventh inning. The lefty cruised through six shutout innings before the Tigers tagged him with back-to-back homers -- the first going for three runs off the bat of Zach Wilson. Theriot lasted 6.1 innings with four earned on eight hits.

The Tiger rally was wiped out with four runs by the Colonels in the eighth. Two runs came home via wild pitches and one scored on an Alvarez single, and the was courtesy of a Jayden Kay sac fly. The runs were more than enough to secure the win as both teams combined for 11 runs in the last two innings.

Nick Heckman picked up the save with 0.2 innings of work.
