Tigers prevent sweep with comeback win over Colonels

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nicholls State University baseball team looked prime for its second sweep in as many weekends, but the Memphis Tigers rallied from a 5-0 deficit with nine consecutive runs to hand the Colonels a 9-6 setback on Sunday at FedEx Park.

The Colonels' (7-6) early lead with highlighted by Xane Washington's second home run of the series, this one a 2-run shot in the second. 

After an Edgar Alvarez RBI in the fourth, Memphis (6-4) held the Colonels to two hits the rest of the way while the offense got going.

The Tigers ended the early shutout with a 2-run homer in the fifth. Then in the sixth, Chris Swanberg capped a five-run frame with another Tiger 2-run home run. 

Memphis pushed its lead to 9-5 in the eighth before Nicholls scored on a wild pitch in the ninth.

Devin Desandro (1-1) took the loss in 0.2 innings, allowing two earned on two hits. Nick Heckman started for the Colonels, tossing four shutout innings and struck out two.

Despite finishing with seven hits, Washington and Coddou turned in multi-hit efforts for Nicholls.

The Colonels will play their next four at Didier Field, starting Wednesday against St. Thomas. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
