MONTGOMERY, Texas - The Nicholls State University men's golf team wrapped up the Bayou City Collegiate Classic with its best round of the event, carding a 300 Tuesday at Walden on Lake Conroe to finish in 13th place out of 16 teams.
With a three-round score of 313-310-300--923, Nicholls finished ahead of Stephen F. Austin (927), HBU (938) and UTRGV (940). All 16 teams shot over in the tournament with Florida Atlantic winning at 12-over 876.
For the Colonels,
Braxton Kuntz was the top finisher for the third consecutive tournament. He shot 1-under 72 on Tuesday for a 77-76-71-224, tying for 26th place out of nearly 100 golfers. Kuntz posted a stretch of 6-under in a nine-hole span, highlighted by his second eagle of the event, this one coming on the par 5 No. 16. He also eagled 9 in Monday's first round.
Ryan O'Neil followed with a 78-72-82-232. His even 72 on Monday was the second best round for the Colonels. He led the team with 10 birdies and had three in the final round.
Rounding out the lineup for Nicholls was
Martin Trochu (239),
Mickael Najmark (240), and
Jace LeJeune (241).
FAU's Alex Maguire took medalist honors after winning a two-hole playoff against New Mexico State's Garrison Smith. Both shot 3-under 213s and were two of just three golfers to finish under.
UP NEXT
Nicholls will head back to Texas for the Southland Conference Championship, held at the Stonebridge Country Club (Dye Course) in McKinney. The three-day tournament begins April 25.
