Baseball falls via walk-off in ninth against Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - An early 4-0 lead for the Nicholls State University baseball team did not hold up as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rallied to tie the game twice before winning on a walk-off double in the ninth for a series-opening 7-6 victory over the Colonels Friday night at Chapman Field.

Nicholls (24-18, 11-8 SLC) entered the day in a three-way tie for first place and find themselves in an even more of a logjam atop the standings as they are still tied with HBU and McNeese, and now three teams are a game back at 10-9. Saturday's Game 2 against the Islanders (23-24, 7-12 SLC) is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Xane Washington and Garrett Felix turned in two-hit nights as Nicholls finished with eight hits. The Islanders totaled 11 hits in the win, as the Colonel pitching staff allowed double-digit hits for the third straight outing.

Edgar Alvarez provided the offense through the first three innings, driving in a run in the first on a sac fly before doubling in another in the third for a 2-0 Colonel lead. Nicholls then doubled its lead in the fourth thanks to a two-run home run by Hunter LeBlanc. Felix led off the frame with his fourth triple of the season.

But the Islanders got three run back in the bottom half, highlighted by a two-run shot by Tre Jones.

The teams traded runs in the fifth, with the Colonels pushing their lead to 5-3 on a Xane Washington RBI single. AMCC led the bottom off with a triple and a double to bring the deficit back to one, and chased Devin Desandro out of the game in the process. Desandro lasted 4.0 innings with four earned runs on six hits.

The home squad tied the game in the sixth on a solo homer, and Nicholls regained the advantage in the eighth after a Jaden Collura run-scoring single. But once again, the Islanders answered in their half with an RBI base hit by pinch-hitter Cole Modgling.

In the bottom of the ninth with the game tied at 5-5, Chase Gearing issued a one-walk before Josh Caraway snuck a grounder down the third-base line for a game-winning double. Gearing (4-3) took the loss after giving up two runs in 3.0 innings of relief.
