FRISCO, Texas - Five members of the Nicholls State University baseball team have been named to the 2022 Southland Academic All-Conference Team, the league announced Wednesday.
Graduate student
Alec Paz was the lone Colonel on the first team after posting a 3.00 grade-point average while obtaining a master's degree in higher education administration. The All-Southland Second Team selection played in 50 games and recorded 44 hits, seven doubles, and 31 RBI. Additionally, his nine home runs ranked 10th in the conference and were the most by a Colonel since 2004.
Three sophomores and one senior represent the Red and Gray on the second team.
Third-team All-Southland shortstop
Parker Coddou holds a 3.58 GPA. The business administration major played in 51 games and tallied 50 hits, including 10 extra-base hits with five doubles, three triples, and two home runs.
Also studying business administration,
Nico Saltaformaggio landed on the team with a 3.80 GPA. He appeared in 18 contests, pitching 55.2 innings. The Destrehan, Louisiana native, finished the season with 46 strikeouts, including a career-high 11 in a run-rule victory over Mississippi Valley State University.
Starting pitcher
Devin Desandro is majoring in health sciences and posted a 3.51 GPA. During the season, he had a 4.92 ERA in 60.1 innings of work in 16 total appearances. In conference play, he posted the fourth-lowest ERA (3.69) and earned third-team All-Southland.
Senior outfielder
Dane Simon posted a 3.71 GPA while majoring in health sciences to earn his third all-academic honor. He started 50 games and had 46 hits, five doubles, and one home run. Simon showed off his base running ability and speed by being tied for seventh in the conference with 18 stolen bases and his 45 runs scored placed him just outside the top 10.
Southland All-Academic teams are voted on by the head coach, sports information director, and an academic staff member from each member school. Student-athletes must possess a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA and have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify. Nominees who were on the all-conference first team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.
