JACKSON, Tenn. - Martin Trochu carded an eagle and six birdies for a career-low 66 in the second round of the Grover Page Classic, as the Nicholls State University men's golf team wrapped up Day One at the Jackson Country Club.
Trochu's 6-under vaulted him up the leaderboard, tying for 10th overall out of the 96-golfer field heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes. The native of France shaved 10 strokes off of his first-round score of 76 to top his personal best of a 71. The 66 was also the lowest round for the Colonels since Jack Lee posted the same score in the 2018 Lake Charles Invitational.
Ryan O'Neil had the second best showing for the Colonels and improved his score from a 77 in the first round to an even 72 in the second. O'Neil's second round was highlighted by a double eagle on the par-5 15th. He drained his second shot with a 9-iron for the only double eagle of the tournament.
The Colonels got off to a sluggish start for the day, ending Round 1 in last place by a stroke with a 307. But the team had a 17-stroke improvement in its second go-around to move up four spots to 12th place.
"I'm quite proud of Martin today with six birdies and an eagle in the second round. The 66 was a career low for him as a Colonel," said Nicholls head golf coach
James Schilling. "Overall, we moved up the leaderboard, the kids didn't quit fighting and we improved as a team today."
Trochu had two eagles on the day -- both on No. 15. After having seven bogeys in the opening round, he had just two in the second. Trochu and
Peyton Canter paced the Colonels in the opening round with 76s.
Trochu's 66 was the lowest of the entire field, matched by only Murray State's Jay Nimmo in the same round.
Nicholls enters Tuesday two strokes behind Southeastern and two ahead of Austin Peay. A shotgun start is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
