MATHEWS, La. - Strong showings by four Colonels helped propel the Nicholls State University men's golf team to first place in the early second round of the LaTour Intercollegiate, but the Red and Gray would end Day 1 in sixth place after 36 holes at the LaTour Golf Club.
Diego Prat Cruza and
Chase Pochylko each shot 1-under 143s for Monday's action to tie for 13th on the leaderboard. Prat had the lowest round for the Colonels with a 2-under 70 to start the day while Pochylko was joined in the opening round by
Jack Moro and
Zachary Morvant with 1-under 71s. Pochylko and senior
Mickael Najmark led the lineup with even 72s in the second round. Freshmen
Dylan Weber and
Thomas Danielson turned in even rounds competing as individuals.
With all four countable scores at 71 or better in the first round, Nicholls posted 283 to place third. Hot starts by Pochylko, who paced the team with 10 birdies, and Moro in the second briefly put the Colonels atop the leaderboard. Although the team finished at 3-over for the round, the Colonels slipped three spots overall with a 574.
The lone eagle for Nicholls was courtesy of Danielson. The freshman carded a 3 on the Hole 3 as he was one of four golfers to eagle the hole.
Heading into the final round, HCU (-12) holds a one-stroke lead over Southeastern, with New Orleans (-9) close behind for third. Nicholls (-2) is three strokes back of UIW and four of Stephen F. Austin. HCU's Brooks Pawlak has a two-stroke edge (-8) on the individual leaderboard.

Tuesday's final round is scheduled for a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
