SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Nicholls State University men's golf team shot its lowest round of the SLC Championship with a 296 and sophomore
Braxton Kuntz finished just outside the Top 10 with a 3-over as the Colonels wrapped up the tournament Thursday at the Hill Country Golf Club.
As a team, Nicholls went from a 301 on Tuesday to a 300 yesterday before finishing the three-day event by shaving off four strokes. Kuntz matched his Wednesday score of 74 to tie for 11th place with a total of 219.
Martin Trochu led the Colonels in the final round with a 1-over 73 after carding three birdies.
"We improved each round and that was the most important thing I was trying to do," head coach
James Schilling said. "The key to today's round was our start. We were much cleaner and instead of being 4 or 5 strokes over, we were even and maybe under."
Kuntz also had three birdies -- all coming on the front nine, but a triple bogey on 16 dropped him down the leaderboard. His other eight holes on the back went for par.
Mickael Najmark had the second-best finish for the Colonels with a 226. He also matched his score from yesterday with a 3-over 75.
Ryan O'Neil shot consecutive 75s as well for a 228.
Jace LeJeune totaled a 233 but was able to close out the event with a long birdie putt on 18.
"I'd like to thank our two seniors -- Ryan and Martin," Schilling said. "I truly appreciate the contributions that they made to our program for four years."
