Senior Day highlights Colonel Softball's finale against Islanders

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team will wrap up the regular season with a three-game series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, starting with a Friday doubleheader at 4 p.m. at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.

Saturday's finale is scheduled for noon, with Senior Day ceremonies set to take place following the game. The Colonels will recognize their six-member senior class -- Abby Andersen, Mckenzie Champagne, Samantha Gwiazda, Audrey McNeill, Alexa Poche' and Syndee Shelton

With next week's Southland Conference Tournament slated to begin on Tuesday in Hammond, Louisiana, Nicholls (26-24, 13-8 SLC) is looking at the No. 4 seed after dropping two of three to UIW last weekend. The Cardinals hold a 1.0 game lead over the Colonels for No. 3 with three games remaining. The Islanders (21-18, 9-12 SLC) come to Thibodaux sitting at sixth in the standings.

Although Nicholls only notched one win in its four-game road trip to Texas, which included a matchup with the No. 1 Texas Longhorns, four Colonels produced five or more hits for the offense. Poche' led the way with seven hits, belting four doubles with one home run and six RBIs. Reagan Heflin also tallied seven hits, Andersen had six while Riley Rutherford made the most of her seven at-bats with five hits.

Heflin upped her batting average in league play to .378 which ranks seventh in the Southland. On the season, she has 52 hits with a team-high 24 RBIs. Andersen is also batting .370 in the SLC slate and is one of three Colonels with seven stolen bases.

McNeill picked up the win in the Colonels' lone victory last week, tossing all nine innings in the 4-2 win at UIW. McNeill limited the Cardinals to four hits on the day and lowered her season opponent batting average to .227. She enters the final weekend with the second-most innings pitched in league play and ranks fifth with a 1.76 ERA.

The Islanders enter the regular season finale coming off a series loss to first-place McNeese, but were able to hand the Cowgirls their second loss in league play. Reigning Pitcher of the Year Primrose Aholelei limited McNeese to a run in the Islanders' 2-1 victory. Aholelei is having another outstanding year for AMCC, boasting a 15-9 record with a 2.07 ERA and a league-high 178 strikeouts.

The Islanders are led on offense by Monee Montilla and Taniece Tyson. Montilla has a team-high .330 batting average with nine doubles while Tyson has driven in 20 runs and powers AMCC with six home runs.

Nicholls took three of four against the Islanders last season, winning the series in Corpus Christi before defeating AMCC in the Southland Tournament in an elimination game, 1-0.
