Colonels Shine in Season Opener

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Nicholls State University track and field teams began the indoor season by accumulating 13 top 10 finishes in the LSU Purple Tiger on Friday.

The men's squad dominated the 200-meter race as the Colonels had five runners finish in the top 10. Nisaiah Bennett clocked a time of 22:40 to win the event. Michael "Trey" Crawford (23:54), Kyshun Webster (23:96), Andrei Fuentes (24.03), and Jordan Jackson (24:30) placed fourth and seventh through ninth, respectively. Webster also placed eighth in the 400m race with a time of 54.98.

The women's unit excelled on the track as Maria Nikolaou finished the 600m race with a time of 1:38.65 to place fourth in the event while Jinte Braas ran the women's 800m in 2:29.15 to finish fifth.

In the field, Iradi Blasco soared 1.63 meters to place fourth in the women's high jump. The Colonels took eighth in the women's and men's triple jump events as Sydney Brown and Chris Tucker leaped 11.35m and 13.32, respectively. Tucker also placed 10th in the long jump with a 6.22m mark.

Head Coach Stefanie Slekis thoughts on the performances.

"We had a strong opener both sprints and mid-distance/distance saw some personal bests and best openers. Most notably Nisaiah setting personal bests in both the 60m and 200m and Issy Rivault in the women's mile."

"In our field events and hurdles we saw where we need the most work and have a plan to get where we want to be in the next month or so. I'm excited for jumps and throws to have another great opportunity at McNeese in a week or so although the winter weather this week has us reschedule our periodization a bit to maximize our training opportunities before then."

"Additionally our women's pentathletes will have their first opportunity to high jump and throw shot put while also completing the entire pentathlon. for 200m to 3000m we are ready for a strong showing at McNeese as well. Especially after the strong opener those event groups had."
