THIBDOAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team defeated UT-Martin 15-8 on a windy Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Sunday afternoon.
Nicholls had a great start to the game on offense and defense. After starting pitcher
Haden Luke retired the first three batters in order, the Colonels plate four runs on four hits in the home half of the opening inning.
Keegan Giger got the action started with a leadoff home run to right field. Following a walk by
Casey Artigues and a double by
Greyson Shafer,
Caston Thompson cleared the bases with a base knock to center field. After Thompson advanced to second on a wild pitch,
Matt Melancon put the Colonels up 4-0 with a double to right center field.
The Colonels lead didn't last long as the Skyhawks scored five runs across the next two innings. UTM began the second inning with a lead off home run before scoring on a ground out. The Skyhawks took a 5-4 lead on a three-run blast in the ensuing inning.
Following a scoreless fourth frame, the Red & Gray exploded for five runs on four hits in the home half of the fifth. Melancon got the scoring started as he plated Shafer and Thompson with a single to center field. After a
Carter Jenkins base knock
Jaxon Milam blasted a three-run home run to put the Red & Gray up 9-5 through five full frames.
Both teams went scoreless in the sixth frame before combing for eight runs in the seventh. UTM scored three runs via a home run to make the score 9-8. The Colonels responded by putting up five runs on three hits and one Skyhawk error. Nicholls did all their damage with two down as Giger plated
Clayton Pourciau from second with a single. After
Karson Irvin scored on a wild pitch, Shafer put the Colonels up 14-8 with a three-run homer to left field. Giger added another RBI with a base hit in the eighth.
The hot offense from the Colonels produced 15 hits including four extra base knocks. Giger led the way with three hits and three RBI. Shafer, Thompson, Melancon, Jenkins, and Milam tallied two hits apiece while both
Casey Artigues and Irvin had one.
For the pitching staff, Luke picked up his first victory of the season after striking out eight batters and allowing five runs in five full frames.
