THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team recorded 11 hits en route to a 16-2 run rule victory over Dillard on Ben Meyer Diamond and Ray E. Didier Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Nicholls' (4-6) has won four straight games and has tallied double figure hits in all of those contests. The offense started fast as
Keegan Giger began the game with a leadoff double before later scoring a of
Greyson Shafer sacrifice fly. Next,
Caston Thompson and
Matt Melancon laced consecutive doubles to pt the Colonels up 2-0 early.
Following a quick 1-2-3 top of the second from starting pitcher
Cannon Hensarling, the
Andy Miller tripled to left center field before scoring on a throwing error on the same play to extend the Colonels' lead to three. In the third stanza, Dillard cut the deficit to one as they scored on leadoff home run and a ground out.
Nicholls went scoreless in the third inning before scoring 13 runs across the next three frames. The Colonels began the fourth with consecutive walks before Miller and
Karson Irvin plated runs with back-to-back base knocks. Miller scored again on a Giger sac fly before Irvin scored on a bunt single by
Casey Artigues.
Caston Thompson plated Artigues with a single to right field to put the Colonels up 8-2.
After another 1-2-3 inning, this time by
Karson Trichel, the Colonels added five runs bottom of the fifth. Following a pair of lead off walks, Miller brought
Carter Jenkins home with a base knock before Irvin extended the lead with an RBI double. Following a pitching change, Miller and Irvin scored on a
Noah Detillier base hit. Christian Wescott who walked, scored from first as he hustled around the bases and took advantage of a throwing error.
The Red & Gray scored three runs on five walks in the sixth.
Lex Melancon earned a leadoff walk before Miller reached on a fielding error and
Tyler Johnson walked to load the bases. Next, Melancon scored on a Detillier walk before Miller and Johnson scored as
Aaron Biediger and
Fisher Ingersoll were hit by pitches.
For the pitching staff,
Cannon Hensarling picked up his first win of the season after striking out three batters and allowing three hits and two runs in three full frames.
Karson Trichel also had three strikeouts in two full innings of work.
Shaydon Benson pitched a full stanza before
Noah Melancon pitched the final inning and allowed one hit and struck out two batters.
