THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball picked up victories against Jackson State and Xavier La. on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Tuesday and Wednesday.
GAME ONE: Nicholls 12, Jackson State 2 (7 inn.)
Nicholls was clicking on all cylinders early as starting pitcher
Will Mabry began the game with a 1-2-3 first inning before striking out three batters in the second. Mabry's momentum sparked the offense who scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the second.
Nico Rijo-Berger got the action started with a leadoff double before being plated by
Greyson Shafer who also hit a double. Next,
Casey Artigues and
Logan Terry walked to load the bases to setup
Keegan Giger who blasted a grand slam to deep right field to put the Colonels up 5-0.
Both teams scored two runs apiece in the third frame. After JSU scored on a single and a ground out the Colonels scored on a Shafer base knock up the middle before scoring on a
Logan Terry sacrifice fly a few plays later to put the Colonels up 7-2.
Following another 1-2-3 frame from Mabry, the Colonels scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. After the Colonels loaded the bases with three walks, Rijo-Berger and Shafer plated
Matt Melancon and
Caston Thompson with singles.
Carter Jenkins scored on a ground out to put the Colonels up 10-2.
Eli Waters replaced Mabry on the mound and pitched his own 1-2-3 frame before the Colonels scored on a Rijo-Berger single and a Shafer sac fly to extend their lead to 10. Waters retired the Tigers in order again in the sixth before
Cole Simoneaux finished the game on the mound with three strikeouts in the seventh.
GAME TWO: Nicholls 5, Xavier (La.) 4
Nicholls' starting pitcher
Caleb Dyess set the tone by retiring the side in order in the first inning. The Colonels' offense responded with a triple by
Aaron Biediger down the left field line that allowed
Noah Detillier to score from first.
The Colonels extended their lead as Christian Wescott plated
Fisher Ingersoll with a base knock to right field.
Clayton Pourciau singled up the middle and later scored on a groundout to put the Colonels up 3-0.
Following an efficient 1-2-3 frame from relief pitcher Owen Schexanydre, Mabry hit a single and later scored on a Pourciau sacrifice fly. Xavier scored three runs with two down in the top of the fourth. Kai Higginson hit a RBI double before Bryce Thomas plated two with a base knock to center field. The Colonels led 4-3 for until
Andy Miller reached on a throwing error and later scored on a sac fly to put the Red & Gray up two. The Gold Rush scored on an infield single in the eighth but the Colonels kept them at bay for the rest of the game.
