THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to UTRGV on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Friday night.
In a game that featured seven scoreless innings, Nicholls starting pitcher
Nuno Parache struck out 10 batters while allowing six hits and one run in eight full innings of work. UTRGV's starting pitcher Sergio Lopez struck out six batters while allowing seven hits and one run as he matched Parache's eight frames of work.
Both teams had eight hits as UTRGV took a 1-0 lead on a base hit in the top of the fourth inning. Parache kept the Vaqueros off the board and the Red & Gray responded in the bottom of the seventh.
Greyson Shafer earned a leadoff walk before scoring on a two out base knock by
Keegan Giger to tie the game at one.
Relief pitcher
Peyton Lacy replaced Parache on the mound and retired the Vaqueros in order in the ninth. UTRGV's relief pitcher Anthony Garcia retired the Colonels in order to setup an eventful 10th stanza.
The inning began with a Vaqueros' single before the pinch runner was caught trying to steal second by
Logan Terry and
Jaxon Milam. Following a walk and advancement on a ground out, Austin Stracener plated the go ahead run with a base hit to left field.
Caston Thompson reached base with a two out single but the Colonels' were unable to score in the 10th.
