THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team is looking to keep their momentum rolling as they host the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in a three-game series on March 13-15.
Friday and Saturday's night games are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and will have the themes of 90's Night and Military Appreciation. Sunday's contest has no theme and will begin at 1 p.m.
Nicholls (11-8, 3-2 SLC) is riding a seven-game winning streak after winning two games at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and taking mid-week games against Jackson State and Xavier (La.).
The Colonels' offense is spearheaded by
Caston Thompson who lead the team in batting average (.382), hits (26), doubles (5), home runs (5). Leadoff batter
Keegan Giger (.286) has 22 hits and leads the team in RBI (20).
Greyson Shafer (.296) has 16 hits including three home runs and has 15 RBI.
The Red & Gray pitching staff has 191 combined strikeouts and rank 38th nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (10.7).
Haden Luke and
Dawson Richard have the most strikeouts with 22 and 21 respectively, while
Cole Simoneaux has 17.
Joseph Bordelon has 14 strikeouts and two saves.
UTRGV (7-10, 2-4 SLC) enters the weekend on a two-game losing streak as they took the first two games against New Orleans before dropping the series finale on Sunday. The Vaqueros then crossed state lines and lost 11-7 at Louisiana.
UTRGV's offense is sparked by Thomas Williams who has a team high 23 hits while batting .371. Julius Ramirez has the second-best batting average (.302) and leads the team in RBI. Armani Raygoza leads the unit in home runs (7) and has 15 RBI. The Vaqueros' pitching staff is led by Sergio Lopez (6.19 ERA) and Harrison Thayer (2.49 ERA) who have 23 and 19 strikeouts respectively.
