Colonels Drop Game Two Against Vaqueros, 11-7

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team was beaten 11-7 by UTRGV on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Saturday night.
 
After generating a 7-2 lead after five full innings, Nicholls (11-10, 3-4 SLC) allowed nine unanswered runs across the sixth, seventh and eighth frames drop the second game of the series to UTRGV (9-10, 4-4 SLC).
 
The Colonels' offense was clicking early as Carter Jenkins plated Matt Melancon with a single before Greyson Shafer brought Caston Thompson and Jenkins home on a two run double to center field to put the Colonels up 3-0 at the end of the opening inning.
 
UTRGV responded with two RBI singles in the second inning before the teams combined for scoreless innings in the third and fourth. After starting pitcher Austin Vargas retired the Vaqueros in order for the third time, the Red & Gray extended their lead with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Keegan Giger got the offense started with a one out double before scoring on a Melancon base knock up the middle. Following a fly out, Jenkins single to center field before Nico Rijo-Berger cleared the bases with a home run to deep right field to put the Colonels up 7-2.
 
The Vaqueros scored two runs in the sixth, five runs in the seventh and two more runs in the eighth to put the game on ice. The Colonels had 10 hits as Shafer led the way with three while Melancon, Rijo-Berger, and Jenkins had two apiece. The Red & Gray pitching staff finished with 10 strikeouts as Vargas led the way with five in 5.1 innings of work.
