Colonels Clipped by Demons in Series Finale, 6-4

THIBODAUX, La. – Starting pitcher Haden Luke recorded a career high 14 strikeouts in the Nicholls State University baseball team's  6-4 loss Northwestern State University on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Sunday afternoon.

Luke set the tone early as eight of his first nine outs were recorded via strikeout. He allowed six hits and walked one batter as he recorded double figure strikeouts for the first time in his career in six full innings of work. His 14 strikeouts match the second most by a Colonel since 2010.

Following a scoreless opening stanza, Will Mabry put the Colonels up 1-0 with a base knock through the right side of the infield in the second inning. Luke had some trouble in the top of the fourth as they allowed back-to-back hits and a walk to load the bases. However, he fanned his 11th batter to leave the three runners stranded.

Both teams' went scoreless in the third and fourth innings before the Colonels extended their lead in the fifth and sixth frames. Logan Terry and Jaxon Milam tallied consecutive doubles to plate a run in the fifth. After Luke struck out the side in order for the second time, Carter Jenkins laced a two out solo home run to right field to out the Colonels up 3-0.

Following a pitching change, the Demons got within one via an RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning. In the home half of the inning, Matt Melancon plated pinch runner Karson Ivin home via a sac fly following a brief weather delay.

The Demons took the lead in the eighth as they scored four runs on a home run and an RBI single. Eli Waters took over on the mound as retired the Demons in order before the Colonels threatened with runners in scoring position but let them stranded in the ninth.

The Colonels had seven hits as Greyson Shafer and Jenkins led the way with two apiece. Keegan Giger, Terry, and Milam had one hit each. Peyton Lacy, Owen Schexnaydre, and Waters pitched one full frame apiece. Schexnaydre suffered his second loss of the season as he allowed three hits and four runs in his lone inning of action.
