Baseball Sweeps DH Against Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Following a controversial game on Friday, the Nicholls State University baseball team swept a double header against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with 8-3 and 14-5 victories on Saturday afternoon.
 
GAME ONE: Nicholls 8, AMCC 3
 
Nicholls found its offensive rhythm late in the game after falling behind 3-2 the Colonels plated five runs on four hits in the sixth inning to take control of the game.
 
Caston Thompson and Carter Jenkins got the offense started with back-to-back singles before Nico Rijo-Berger and Jaxon Milam brought them home with singles of their own. Logan Terry earned a bases loaded walk to allow Rijo-Berger to scored before Greyson Shafer scored on a play where Keegan Giger reached on a fielder's choice.
 
The Red & Gray were stout defensively as they allowed three hits. Starting pitcher Dawson Richard struck out seven batters and allowed one hit in five full frames en route to his second victory of the season. Tyler Avery replaced him on the mound and produced three punch outs while allowing one hit in three innings of work. Eli Waters struck out two batters and allowed one hit in the ninth to secure his first save.
 
The Colonels' offense had eight hits as Rijo-Berger and Milam had two apiece. Rijo-Berger opened the game with a RBI base knock to give the Colonels an early 1-0 lead. After the Islanders scored two runs the Milam tied the game with his second home run of the season on the opening pitch of the fifth frame.
 
 
GAME TWO: Nicholls 14, AMCC 5
 
Nicholls kept their offensive momentum rolling as they had 18 hits and began the game with eight unanswered runs through the first four frames.
 
The Colonels began the game by scoring on a groundout in the first inning. The Red & Gray plated three runs on four hits in the second. Hudson Mattox laced a one out triple to left field before scoring on a Milam double. Logan Terry brought Milam home before scoring on a Matt Melancon double up the middle.
 
Following a scoreless third, the Colonels scored five runs on four hits and two errors in the fourth. Melancon plated Terry with a single before Thompson brought him home with his own single. After Jenkins and Rijo-Berger reached on a fielder's choice and a fielding error, Greyson Shafer blasted a home run to deep right field to put the Red & Gray up 8-0.
 
The Islanders scored five runs across the fifth and sixth inning before the Colonels scored five runs in the final three frames. Terry and Giger picked up RBI on base knocks in the seventh, pinch runner Andy Miller scored on a Shafer single in the eighth, while Giger picked up two more RBI with a homer in the final frame.

Starting pitcher Haden Luke struckout nine batters and allowed one hit in five full innings to earn his third victory of the season. Dalton Hill recorded two strikeouts in two full frames while Karson Trichel and Cole Poirrier combined for three strikeouts in two scoreless stanzas.

Nicholls (9-8) will host midweek games against Jackson State and Xavier (La.) on March 10 and 11. First pitch on both days is scheduled for 6 p.m.
