Colonels Complete Comeback to Secure Series Against Cardinals

THIBODAUX, La. – After trailing by six, the Nicholls State University baseball team's designated hitter Nico Rijo-Berger laced a base hit up the middle to bring Fisher Ingersoll home to complete the comeback in the Colonels' 11-10 extra innings victory over Lamar University on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Saturday night.
 
Following a scoreless 10th frame, Cole Simoneaux struck out three batters in the top of the 11th to build momentum for Nicholls (18-17, 11-9 SLC). Ingersoll worked a full count one-one-out walk and later stole second base. After a challenge on the call at second, Casey Artigues was intentionally walked to set up Rijo-Berger who plated the winning run with a base hit on the first pitch of his at bat.
 
Nicholls trailed 9-8 before Caston Thompson tied the game by plating Artigues with a base knock in the bottom of the seventh. In the next stanza Nicholls' pitcher Eli Waters retired Lamar in order before Logan Terry put the Colonels on top 10-9 with a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the eighth. Lamar tied the game on a base knock in the ninth before retiring the Colonels to send the contest to extra innings.
 
After falling behind 8-2, Nicholls began its comeback effort by scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. Carter Jenkins worked a leadoff walk before Greyson Shafer blasted a home run to left field to cut the deficit in half.
 
Lamar added a run added a run on a double before the Colonels scored four runs on three hits and three walks in the bottom of the fourth. Keegan Giger got the offense started with a two out single before scoring from first on a Shafer double to left center field. Shafer scored a few plays later on a passed ball. Next, Logan Terry and Ingersoll reached base on consecutive walks before Jaxon Milam scored as he took advantage of a fielding error. Terry scored on a bases loaded walk.
 
In a game that saw the teams combine for 29 hits Rijo-Berger and Shafer led the way with three hits apiece while combining for six RBI. Milam had two hits while Artigues, Thompson, Giger, Terry and Ingersoll had one. The Colonels also worked nine walks at the plate.
 
Simoneaux earned his second victory of the season after registering five strikeouts whole allowing one hit in 1.2 innings of work. Karson Trichel had the longest outing as he had a pair of strikeouts while allowing four hits and one earned run in 3.1 frames. Waters matched Simeoneaux's five strikeouts as he allowed two hits and one run in two full innings.
