BEAUMONT, Texas -
Caston Thompson hit his 12th home run of the season to double the Colonels' lead and the Nicholls State University baseball team defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with a 6-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at Vincent‑Beck Stadium.
Originally played on March 6 in Corpus Christi, Texas, the game was restarted in the first inning due to an appeal won by AMCC. Nicholls held a 1-0 lead in the bottom half with two outs and the bases loaded.
The score in Wednesday's rematch remained the same until Nicholls (8-8, 2-2 SLC) scored runs on back-to-back bunts by
Karson Irvin and
Keegan Giger in the fifth inning. Then in the seventh, Thompson blasted a three-run shot over the center field wall for a 6-0 advantage.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-6, 0-1 SLC) threatened in the eighth by loading the bases with one out, but
Cole Poirriertook over on the mound and allowed a sacrifice fly and an infield single before stranding three with a strikeout. He then retired the Islanders in order in the ninth to finish the game.
Nicholls finished with eight hits, led by
Nico Rijo-Berger who went 2-for-4.
Carter Jenkins had the RBI single in the opening inning of the original game for the 1-0 lead.
Eli Waters started his appearance with the bases loaded and two outs in the first but picked up a strikeout to keep the 1-0 advantage. Then in the second, Nicholls threw out a runner at home to end the frame.
The Colonels played small ball in the fifth to produce the 3-0 advantage. Following a
Jaxon Milam single and a
Greyson Shafer walk to start the inning, Nicholls put down four consecutive bunts. Irvin's bunt was an RBI single while Giger drove in a run on a sacrifice.
In the seventh, Giger started a two-out rally with a double and
Casey Artigues followed with a walk. Then on an 0-1 pitch, Thompson crushed a homer to center field for his 12th long ball of the season and now ranks second in the Southland.
Karson Trichel picked up the win with 3.0 shutout innings of relief, allowing two hits while striking out three.
Peyton Lacythrew 2.1 innings with two strikeouts and Poirrier added two strikeouts in the final 1.2 innings.
Austin Russell and Jackson Smith each had two hits to lead the Islanders.

Nicholls will have the weekend off before hosting Southeastern Baptist for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, April 28.
